These contemporary 'Cailleach Bhéarra' Art Prints are a limited edition of 100 prints, to commemorate the 100 year centenary of Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising.
The name translates to 'The Old Woman of Bearra', whom Pádraig Pearse, one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, personifies as Ireland in his poem 'MIse Éire/ I am Ireland'.
In Irish mythology the 'Cailleach Bhéara' lives on an island off the coast of County Cork and is a shapeshifter who takes the form of a deer and gathers her children down by the shore, to avoid capture. The Celts have numerous stories involving supernatural deer and the giant deer was once the iconic animal of Ireland.
